DIY Ramp or Jack & Stands?

Quick question here. I want to have the ability to get under my Subaru Outback (oil and fluid changes, mods, other basic maintenance), but I don't know how to best get under it. Should I buy a jack and some jack stands for a not-insignificant price? I could go the expensive route with name-brand products, or I could go with cheap Harbor Freight alternatives.

On the other hand, I could build a pair of DIY ramps like these. This would be far less expensive, but obviously has its unique drawbacks. I'm pretty good at fabrication, but safety and durability are still issues. What do you guys think?

if you plan on doing suspension work, get the jack and stands.

Whatever you do, DO NOT buy some cheap no brand shit. Remember the three S's here.. Safety, Safety and Safety.

As said earlier, ramps are fine until you need to take the tires off.

Okay. I'll keep that in mind.

also, a jack and stands takes up less space for storage. The ramps are easier to drive up though.

that looks cool and all but you'd still have to come up with another solution to even be able to rotate your tires.

Snag a sale on Rhino Ramps. They work great for basic maintenance.

I've purchased 2 sets for 40 bucks. One through a sale at Advance Auto, one through a sale at Amazon (with free shipping).

Why did I buy a second? The first didn't fail don't worry, it was an xmas gift for my brother in law. He loves them now too.

I trust Harbor Freight for cheap tools that don't last long, I wouldn't put any trust in something that's preventing a car from crushing me.

If you are going oil changes, just buy some ramps and chocks. You can use the stock scissor jack for when you need to remove a wheel and when you get the point when you need to change your sway bar end links (will happen) or suspension transverse link (will happen) then you can buy some stands and jacks.

I use ramps unless I need to take the wheels off. If you're just doing oil changes and shit like that, just get some ramps from craigslist for $20.

Get a nice jack and some economical stands. HF stands are generally agreed to be safe for the price, just visually check the welds first because I'm paranoid like that. I've seen some DIY ramps work out well but in my opinion that's too much potential for things to go belly-up.

Get these:

Then buy a good jack and good Jack stands.

I hope you have more room in your backyard than that. Otherwise you will have to work it into your croquet course. This was my setup for "over the bonfire" I was testing

Harbor Freight (The Chinese Emporium) NO! That shit looks dangerous to me, the cement mixer in there looks one time use! This is like tires for me, do you want to be resting on something thats crap. It will go bad and you have to scrap them, get good ones and keep them!

Home Depot lists them for $38.97 and available for in-store pickup in some locations.

I made some ramps mostly to just quickly get my truck up off the ground. I usually get the wheels on the ramps and put the park brake on and put jack stands underneath. I never trust any one piece of equipment enough not to have something extra there. Sad thing is that my truck could fall off the ramps and I would still be able to move around fine, just with the skid plate a little closer to my face.

Keep an eye on sales at Lowes and Home Depot. I got a killer deal on a 2.5 ton jack with two 2 ton jack stands made by Husky for $25 from Home Depot. The kit normally goes for around $50-60 I believe, it has been a boon for me and learning my family's vehicles. Well until it got cold and wet/frozen, I wish my garage was larger... and heated...

what you need, is to grab a shovel and start digging a hole. Problem solved.

Get a jack and some stands... I would say that about 30% of what I do with a jack is lifting a car... it's good for holding heavy things up while maneuvering them, compressing suspension without a wheel on it, realigning heavy things that are going back in, lots of stuff.

I have both and they're both equally important and useful. Depends on what kind of work you think you'll be doing most often. I have a pair of 11,000lb capacity Rhino Ramps from Advance Auto that were inexpensive, but have held up perfectly doing oil changes on our Jetta and Envoy.

I have these. they were $40 or so and I really like them exceptmy car bumpers hit them before the tires do and car is too low to get a jack under which was the point of the ramps.

I want these but they cost money.
